The Happy Birthday Email app for Shopify now integrates with MailChimp
Customer Birthdate information can now be sent directly from the Shopify checkout into a MailChimp list of your choice. To get started, we have put together some simple steps on how to enable the integration.
Take a look at the video below where we walk you through setting up the Happy Birthday Email MailChimp integration.
Things to consider when using the MailChimp integration
- You will need to create a manual discount code within your Shopify Admin area, as unfortunately, autogenerated discount codes are not yet available with the MailChimp integration. You will therefore need to create a 'one per email' discount code which you will include within your MailChimp birthday email template.
Please note: You are advised to set a reminder on the date that you create the discount code as you will need to change it each year. If you don't, customers will be unable to use the same code on their next Birthday.
- When you enable the MailChimp integration, Birthday emails will automatically cease to be sent from the Happy Birthday Email app:
Enabling the MailChimp integration within the Happy Birthday Email Shopify app
In order to use MailChimp to send out your automated birthday emails, you will first need to enable the integration from within the Happy Birthday Email app.
Start by clicking on the "Integrations" tab within the app an you will then see two available integration options, one for Klaviyo and one for Mailchimp.
Select the 'Enable' button within the MailChimp option, and you will then be prompted to add an API Key, which can be generated from within your MailChimp account.
Using an existing API Key
If you have previousl generated am API Key that you woudl like to re-use, you can find existing API keys by visiting your MailChimp dashboard and then navigating to: Account > Extras > API Keys
Copy the API Key and head back to the Happy Birthday Email app.
How to generate a MailChimp API Key
If you do not already have an existing MailChimp API Key that you want to use, then you will need to generate one. To do this, navigate from your MailChimp dashboard to: Account > Extras > API Keys - and then click on the button labeled "Create a Key":
Edit the Label and call it something like "Happy Birthday Email Integration":
Now copy the API Key and head back to the Happy Birthday Email app.
Enter the copied API key into the API Key field in the integration settings. MailChimp will then connect to your Shopify store.
The app will then present a dropdown of the current mailing lists within MailChimp. Select which list you would like to use with the Happy Birthday Email integration. We recommend using your main customer list.
Hit Save and you are done.
Retrospectively adding Birthdates to your MailChimp list
Each time a new customer provides their date of birth, either at checkout or on the Birthday Email capture landing page, it is sent straight through to our app. Our app will then send the data through to your specified MailChimp list. This process occurs in real-time, however, depending on how busy our app servers and the Shopify servers are, it could take 5-10 minutes for a Customer's data to appear in your MailChimp list.
If you have been collecting birthday emails using the Happy Birthday Email app prior to enabling the integration, you will need to import the previously collected data into your Mailchimp list.
1) To do this, you first need to export the data from the Happy Birthday Email app. You can find the Customer export utility under the 'data' tab within the app, as seen in the screenshot below:
2) You will then need to navigate to the selected list within your Mailchimp account and click 'import customers', as seen on the screenshot below. All of the field names within the CSV will already match the key fields in your MailChimp list.
Setting up the Automated Birthday Email Campaign in MailChimp
Now you have successfully enabled the MailChimp integration and have imported all of your historic Customer data, it is time to setup the campaign in Mailchimp.
Mailchimp have already created a very simple step by step guide, with videos for this process, which you can view here. Please note, step 1 has already been completed with our integration, so please start from step 2.
